A safety net for Icelandic horses

Icelandic Horse Haven

Working alongside owners and supporters across the United States so that every Icelandic horse has a safe home, companionship, and the individualized care they deserve.

Who we are

Building on the community’s compassion

The Icelandic horse community in the United States is connected by a deep love for this remarkable breed. When an Icelandic horse is in need, owners, breeders, trainers, friends, and supporters often come together—offering their time, sharing resources, and helping horses find a soft landing. That willingness to look out for one another and our horses is a strength of the Icelandic horse community.

Yet even with generous hearts and dedicated efforts, there are times when a horse’s needs exceed the space, resources, or care available.

Icelandic Horse Haven will continue to build on the community’s compassion by providing an additional safety net for Icelandic horses. In collaboration with owners and supporters across the United States, we can work toward ensuring that every Icelandic horse has a safe home, companionship, and the individualized care they deserve.

Our approach

How the Safety Net Works

We work hand in hand with owners and the wider Icelandic horse community, and every plan is built around the individual horse.

  1. Respond

We listen to owners and community members, talk through options, and step in when a horse’s needs exceed what’s available.

  2. Rehabilitate

Each horse receives an individualized care plan covering veterinary, dental, hoof, and nutritional needs.

  3. Retrain

Experienced Icelandic horse handlers help each horse build confidence, manners, and, where appropriate, riding skills.

  4. Rehome

We carefully match horses with adopters, or provide lifelong sanctuary for those who need it.
